Chenrezig (Tibetan) or Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit) is the Buddha of great compassion, of limitless compassion towards all living beings. Chenrezig made the strong vow not to return to nirvana until he had liberated all sentient beings and freed them from suffering. He is seen as the Protector of Tibet and his mantra OM MANI PEME HUM is the most famous Tibetan mantra.

In this four-armed version, Avalokiteshvara sits in full lotus posture. His four arms represent the four Immeasurable Qualities of a Bodhisattva: compassion, love, joy & equanimity. Avalokiteshvara reminds us of the fact that true awakening is not a retreat or escape from personal or worldly problems. It is actually reaching out, helping and embracing the living beings in the entire world with all the love and compassion that is in our heart.
